Summer hair care tips
According to Edita Kavaliauskienė, the international educator and creative director of Keune Haircosmetics in Lithuania, after the end of the summer season, customers often complain about a change in the appearance of their hair, dryness, color fading and the ends of their hair starting to crumble.
Edita shares essential tips on how to protect your hair from harmful UV rays and salty sea water in the summer and on vacation.
1. A head covering is a must-have accessory on the beach
The specialist says that when spending time on the beach, it is necessary to take care of a head covering - a scarf, a hat or a cap. This will protect your hair from direct UVA rays, which fade hair color, and UVB rays, which damage the hair structure and destroy keratin. However, a head covering alone will not be enough, E. Kavaliauskienė urges you to use a special hair oil with SPF on the beach, which will protect your hair from harmful sunlight, drying out and salt water while swimming.
2. The cosmetics basket is specially designed for summer
Hair care, like skin, also changes with the change of seasons. Therefore, it is necessary to choose the right hair care products in summer to protect your hair. "For washing your hair, choose moisturizing protective shampoos that do not weigh down your hair. Do not use extremely hot water when rubbing your head, and rinse your hair with cool water after washing. Do not forget that conditioner is necessary after each wash. In the summer, choose moisturizing conditioners with protection against UV rays, and pamper your hair once a week with a mask that affects all hair layers", advises E. Kavaliauskienė.
3. Don't go outside with wet hair
Although it is common to walk outside with damp or even wet hair in the summer, the specialist says that this can be extremely harmful to the hair, because the sun's rays take moisture out of the hair, so after the holidays we often notice that our hair is much drier and tends to blow out. And if there is no other choice, before leaving the house with wet hair, it is necessary to use conditioner or natural hair oils that protect from the sun.
4. Avoid hair dryers and hair styling products with alcohol
In the summer, the hair faces many challenges, so in order to make it less tiring, you should give up frequent drying with a hair dryer or other devices that heat the hair. E. Kavaliauskienė also recommends avoiding all styling products that contain alcohol, as it only weakens and dries the hair even more.
5. Drink plenty of water and enrich your diet with vitamins
Water is the best friend not only of the skin, but also of the hair. And in the hot summer, you should drink it even more - this way you will maintain hair moisture from the inside. Also, don't forget to include C and B group vitamins and Omega-3 fatty acids in your diet, which help preserve the shine and strength of your hair.
6. After sunbathing, don't forget to take care of your hair
After a long day at the beach, it's extremely important to remember to carefully comb your head and remove any beach products from your hair. "Products with SPF protection should not be left on the hair. Sea water, sand or chlorine in the swimming pool are really big enemies of hair. So, the first thing we have to do after sunbathing is to thoroughly wash our hair and restore moisture using conditioners, masks, oils or serums", says E. Kavaliauskienė. According to her, if you want to have healthy and beautiful hair after the warm season, you need a daily routine, targeted and protective products that will not sit on the bathroom shelf, but will be used every day. This is the only way to enjoy healthy and vibrant hair even after a hot vacation
