Melaleuca alternifolia is the best type of tea tree. Also known are Melaleuca linariifolia and Melaleuca disitiflora. The main components of tea tree essential oil are terpinene and cineole, the Australian standard for this oil is no more than 15% cineole and no less than 30% terpinene, as higher amounts of cineole can cause allergic skin reactions. During selection, plants are left, from which the essential oil has a lower amount of cineole and a higher amount of terpinene. The tea tree oil supplied by Saflora contains a small amount of cineole (2-3%), so it does not irritate the skin, and a large amount of terpinene (40-45%) ensures the effective functioning of the oil itself and cosmetics based on it.

Australian aborigines used the magical tree Melaleuca alternifolia for medicinal purposes. The great European traveler James Cook first noticed this tree during his famous trip in 1770. He observed how the aborigines treated wounds with crushed leaves of this tree and made healing infusions from its fragrant leaves to help with various ailments: scurvy, skin diseases, sunburns, tropical infections, snake bites, etc. Because the healing infusion resembled a tea pod, Captain Cook named this tree the "Tea Tree".
