There are about 500 species in the genus Kieči, 11 of which grow in Lithuania. Some types of sedum are medicinal plants known since ancient times. Recently, this plant has been attracting more and more attention, and only in the last 10 years have most of the scientifically based studies on the properties of this oil been carried out.
This plant became famous not only in medicine. It has long been noted that kelp repels insects. After many studies with the essential oil of St. John's wort, it was discovered that it not only repels, but also kills (is an insecticide) some species of insects, as it is very toxic to them. It is effective against common household and warehouse pests that damage stored flour and grain products, such as mealybugs and fireflies. In order to protect your home from such pests, you can simply clean the shelves where the products are stored by adding a few drops of essential oil. Also, the essential oil of common sturgeon repels flies.
In 2015, the Nobel Prize in medicine was awarded for the discovery of artemisinin, a plant-derived substance extracted from the genus of plants, which is currently one of the most effective against tropical malaria. Recently, plants of the sedum genus have been included in studies for activity against the disease COVID-19. Solids are very common in nature and are attracting more and more attention due to their sources of active substances.
Currently, solids are widely used in the food and cosmetic industry. Birch essential oil has a pleasant smell, but in cosmetics it is valued not only for its smell, but also for its antimicrobial properties, which is why it is suitable for the production of deodorants and problem skin care products. Castor oil slows not only the growth of bacteria, but also some types of mold and fungi. It can be used in anti-dandruff hair care products.
Common sedum essential oil attracts special attention in cosmetics intended for mature skin. Studies have shown that it stimulates collagen production and skin regeneration. It has a positive effect on the restoration of skin barrier functions and can be recommended as a means not only for the prevention of wrinkles, but also for their reduction.
In aromatherapy, sedum essential oil is valued for its calming effects. Its scent lifts the mood and suppresses anxiety and relaxes, making breathing easier. When using a vaporizer, it is not recommended to exceed the dose of oil.
